Experience Newcastle’s Coast in the Rain

One of the best things to do in Newcastle on a rainy day is to lean into the weather and head to the coast. Watching storm clouds roll in over the ocean can be just as memorable as a sunny beach day, with crashing waves and dramatic skies making for a uniquely Newcastle experience.

If conditions are too rough for the open ocean, Newcastle’s ocean baths and pools are a safer option — and let’s be honest, you’re going to get wet anyway.

When you need to warm up, there are plenty of great spots to shelter with a view:

  • Merewether Surfhouse – panoramic ocean views and a relaxed menu
  • Merewether Hotel – classic pub setting overlooking the beach
  • Estabar (Newcastle Beach) – perfect for coffee right by the ocean baths
  • Rustica (Newcastle Beach) – great for brunch with a coastal outlook
  • Time needed: 1–2 hours (or longer if you settle in with food and a view)

Best Photo Spots for Dramatic Rainy-Day Shots

  • Merewether Ocean Baths – waves crashing over the baths with stormy skies
  • Bogey Hole – iconic rock pool with powerful ocean swells
  • Newcastle Ocean Baths & Pavilion – heritage architecture against moody weather
  • Anzac Memorial Walk – sweeping coastal views with dark clouds rolling in
  • King Edward Park – cliffs, greenery, and ocean spray in one frame
  • Nobbys Head & Lighthouse – dramatic seascapes and strong winds
  • Tip: Go just before or after heavy rain for the most dramatic skies, and keep your camera protected from sea spray.
