I was working in Mudgee, clocked off and decided to check out the town. This is what happened.

5:00pm – Walk Along the River & Sculpture Trail
We passed through the little gate in the hedge at the back of the Riverside Caravan Park where we were staying and stepped on to the River Walk. It was beautiful and peaceful strolling along the edge of the Cudgegong River. As the light softened, this peaceful stretch became one of the most scenic spots in town.
Follow the Mudgee Sculpture Walk and keep an eye out for contemporary artworks dotted along the path. It’s an easy, flat walk—perfect for families, couples, or anyone easing into the evening.

5:45pm – Explore Mudgee’s Heritage Streets
From the river, we wandered into town up Church St to admire Mudgee’s beautifully preserved historic buildings. This is where the town’s character really shines.
Highlights to look out for:
- The striking churches scattered throughout town
- The Henry Lawson Memorial, honouring the famed Australian poet
- The charming Town Clock
- The iconic pink Post Office (yes, it really is pink!)
- The elegant Art Deco Theatre

This self-guided wander gives you a feel for Mudgee’s history without needing to commit to a full tour.

6:45pm – Live Music & a Local Brew at Mudgee Brewing Co.
We heard live music coming from the Mudgee Brewing Co. so decided to drop in and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, live music, and a taste of locally crafted beer. A duo called Skaratt and Watts, one on guitar and one on the fiddle blending popular American blues with Irish jigs. They were fantastic!

Even if you’re not big on drinking, the vibe alone makes it worth a stop. If you are, their pale ale is a great place to start.
It’s the perfect way to soak up the local scene as the evening rolls on.
7:45pm – Try Your Luck Spotting a Platypus
As the sun dips lower, make your way back toward the river for one last experience—platypus spotting.
While we didn’t manage to see one on this visit, dusk is one of the best times to try your luck. Find a quiet spot, stay still, and watch the water carefully—you might just be rewarded. They didn’t build a viewing platform for no reason.

Final Thoughts
Three hours is all it takes to fall a little in love with Mudgee. This relaxed evening itinerary blends nature, history, and local flavour—without stepping foot in a winery.
